Acupuncture: A Powerful Tool for Pain Management

By April 24, 2024 April 26th, 2024 No Comments

At The Teal Center, we believe in the body’s intrinsic ability to heal itself, and our healing modalities are designed to support that process. One of the most effective treatments we offer for pain management is acupuncture, a key component of integrative medicine that has been gaining recognition for its ability to provide relief for various types of pain.

As Dr. Astrid Pujari, MD, medical director of the Center for Integrative Medicine at Virginia Mason Medical Center, stated during the annual ACP Internal Medicine Meeting, “If there’s one thing you can remember for acupuncture, it’s that [there are] quite a bit of data to support it for pain in many different arenas.” (link)

The Growing Evidence Supporting Acupuncture

Over the past two decades, there has been an explosion of research supporting the use of acupuncture for pain management. More than 13,000 studies conducted in 60 countries have consistently shown acupuncture to be particularly effective for chronic low back pain, general chronic pain, migraines, tension headaches, and knee osteoarthritis. A 2012 meta-analysis of 29 randomized trials and 17,922 patients demonstrated that patients who received acupuncture had significantly lower pain scores compared to control groups for chronic headache, osteoarthritis pain, and back and neck pain.

How Acupuncture Works

Dr. Pujari explained that “acupuncture has been shown to stimulate the release of endogenous opiates in the body” and “increases opioid receptor binding potential in the brain,” leading to more effective pain relief over time. This natural approach to pain management has been found to provide long-lasting relief without the risks associated with pharmaceutical interventions.

Recognized by Major Medical Organizations

The efficacy of acupuncture for pain management has been recognized by major medical organizations, including the American College of Physicians (ACP) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which have included acupuncture in their guidelines for noninvasive treatments for chronic, acute, and subacute low back pain. Medicare has also approved coverage for acupuncture, further validating its effectiveness.
