A trigger point is a taut band in muscle tissue that causes referred pain when activated.  Trigger point therapy involves specific and thorough palpation of muscles and fascia to identify active trigger points.

The therapist applies static pressure to the trigger point to deactivate it and relieve the referred pain. Some trigger points cause common referred pain patterns such as headaches, and sometimes pain of unknown origin may be caused by an uncommon or hidden trigger point.  A skilled therapist will work with you to find hidden or unusual sources of referred pain.  After releasing a trigger point the therapist stretches the muscle and fascia to ensure proper function of the muscle.
