What is Oncology Acupuncture?
First, let’s clarify what oncology acupuncture isn’t—it’s not a magical cure or a replacement for western medicine. Instead, it’s a supportive, evidence-based therapy designed to complement medical treatment. Oncology acupuncture has been shown to mitigate negative symptoms and improve the quality of life for cancer patients.
Important Note: Any oncology patient seeking acupuncture must get approval from their medical team before proceeding.
Acupuncture helps the body maintain homeostasis. Simply put, acupuncture points are used to stimulate neural pathways that bring bodily functions into balance. We’re all aware that cancer and its treatments can do a lot to disrupt a body’s natural, pleasant, harmonious state. Patients undergoing surgery, radiation, and/or chemotherapy often are dealing with significant and sometimes overwhelming symptoms, often as side effects of treatment.
Oncology acupuncture focuses on:
- Reducing negative side effects of treatment.
- Supporting the body’s natural defenses during and after treatment.
This complementary therapy integrates seamlessly with conventional cancer treatments and is even effective for lingering symptoms after treatment is completed. Oncology acupuncture is safe, non-invasive, non-pharmacological, and increasingly supported by scientific research.
Symptoms Treated by Oncology Acupuncture
Common symptoms that can be alleviated with oncology acupuncture include (but are not limited to):
- Pain
- Fatigue
- Anxiety
- Mental restlessness or brain fog
- Insomnia
- Hot flashes
- Nausea
- Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy (CIPN)
What Does Holistic Support Mean?
Holistic support means treating the whole person—not just a specific symptom or condition. With oncology acupuncture, you are not defined by your cancer, treatment, or this particular stage of your healing journey. Instead, holistic care takes into account your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
Using evidence-based protocols, we build a personalized treatment plan tailored to your unique situation.
For example:
- Physical relief, such as reducing nausea or pain, may be the immediate goal.
- However, the experience of acupuncture also creates a calming effect, helping to manage emotional stress.
- Acupuncture offers an opportunity to pause, breathe, and take a break while engaging in self-care—a vital aspect of healing that is often overlooked in conventional treatments.
Is Oncology Acupuncture Evidence-Based?
Yes, it is! Over the past two decades, extensive research has been conducted on the effectiveness of acupuncture, particularly in the field of oncology. Much of this research comes from esteemed institutions like Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) in New York. Below are some of the most noteworthy studies:
Pain, Fatigue, Insomnia, and Quality of Life
- IMPACT Study (2022): Epstein et al conducted a randomized controlled trial (RCT) with nearly 300 patients with advanced cancer. Results showed significant improvements in pain, fatigue, insomnia, and overall quality of life.

Pain Management
- PEACE Study (2019): Mao et al studied the different forms of acupuncture, ie electro-stimulation vs auricular ‘battlefield’ acupuncture for cancer survivors dealing with chronic muscle pain. With about 250 patients completing the study, the results showed statistically significant reduction in pain for both groups compared with usual care.

Fatigue
- Vickers Study (2004): A small study by Vickers et al demonstrated that acupuncture reduced post-chemotherapy fatigue by an average of 31.1%. Participants were an average of two years post-chemotherapy.

Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy (CIPN)
- Ben-Arye Study (2022): Published in the American Cancer Society Journal, this study concluded that acupuncture, with or without complementary integrative medicine (CIM), significantly reduced CIPN symptoms such as tingling, numbness, pain, and discomfort.

Ongoing Research
- ENHANCE Study: Currently in Phase II, this study at MSKCC is examining the effects of acupuncture on insomnia and cognitive challenges (brain fog) in breast cancer survivors. Stay tuned for updates!
